PORDENONE (ITALY): Saudi Arabia’s Saleh Al-Saif and Portugal’s Alexandre Ré secured first and second places in the FIA T4 category for the South Racing Can-Am Team at the two-day Italian Baja in northern Italy.

Al-Saif teamed up with Russian navigator Kirill Shubin and two stage wins enabled the Can-Am Maverick driver to stay clear of Ré and his brother Pedro to secure the vital victory by just 5.1 seconds.

Points earned by both drivers now means that Al-Saif overhauls team-mate Meshari Al-Thefiri to top the standings in the FIA World Cup for Baja’s T4 section and Ré secures the FIA European Baja Cup title with one round still to run in Portugal at the end of October.

“This is a great result for us to win the FIA European Cup with one race to go,” said Ré. “It was a challenging start to the event and a fight to the end with a small margin at the end.”

Kuwait’s Al-Thefiri suffered a severe setback to his push for the FIA World Cup T4 title. Partnered by Qatar’s Nasser Al-Kuwari, Al-Thefiri was well placed after the qualifying stage but was sidelined following an accident on the first of the selective sections on Friday afternoon. He now needs to beat both his rivals in Portugal to stand any chance of winning the title.

After Friday’s unfortunate accident we were not able to continue,” said the Kuwaiti. “But we look forward to Baja Portalegre where we are still in a fight for the championship. We can drop our two worst events. It is going to be difficult but we are there to fight.”

South Racing Can-Am Team’s manager Scott Abraham said: “Once again, it was a great event for the South Racing Can-Am Team and a brilliant job by two of our teams to secure the top two spots on the podium. It showed that the Can-Am was the fastest and most reliable SSV in the field. It was fantastic for Alex and Pedro to wrap up the inaugural European Cup. But it will be a nail-biting finale in Portugal with Saleh and Mshari going head-to-head to try and win the FIA World Cup. South Racing has also wrapped up the FIA T4 Teams’ Championship, as well as the European Cup.

“Now we have some big weeks of work ahead of us with the Rally of Morocco with a big entry at the start of October.”

Competitive action for the South Racing Can-Am Team began with the 7.55km Meduna qualifying stage on Friday lunchtime. Al-Saif pipped Al-Thefiri and Ré to the T4 win by just 1.2 and 2.1 seconds respectively, with Amerigo Ventura in fourth place.

“There was some very deep water in four or five places,” admitted Al-Thefiri’s co-driver Al-Kuwari. “The car was full of water. Our overalls were wet. But it was a good start.”

The starting order was duly arranged for the first of four selective sections, with teams tackling 74.94km across nearby riverbeds and flood plains on Friday afternoon. Al-Saif recorded a stage time of 1hr 09min 47sec but that dropped the Saudi into second at the night halt behind Ventura. Ré was third but Al-Thefiri suffered a costly retirement after an accident that severely dented his title ambitions.

Three runs through a selective section of 92.31km between Pasch and Dignano were on the cards for the final day.

Al-Saif won the opener in a time of 1hr 23min 59sec to snatch the outright lead from Ventura by 39.3 seconds. A second quickest time also enabled Ré to close the gap on the overnight leader and he was third, 61.8 seconds adrift of second overall.

Ré was quickest than Al-Saif by 25 seconds on the second pass and managed to overhaul Ventura to snatch second place. The Portuguese duly headed into the third and final run trailing his Saudi team-mate by 1min 16.1sec.

Ré said: “We tried again to do nothing bad to the car. The Can-Am was perfect. We needed to beat the Yamaha and we won the stage in the T4 with a good time. It was nice to drive in this stage.”

Ré managed to win the last stage by 71 seconds to force a thrilling finale but it was not enough to deprive Al-Saif of the category win by the margin of just 5.1 seconds. Ventura rounded off the podium places.

PORDENONE (ΙΤΑΛΊΑ): Ο Σαουδάραβας Saleh Al-Saif και ο Πορτογάλος Alexandre Ré εξασφάλισαν την πρώτη και τη δεύτερη θέση στην κατηγορία FIA T4 για την ομάδα Can-Am της South Racing στο διήμερο ιταλικό Baja στη βόρεια Ιταλία.

Ο Al-Saif συνεργάστηκε με τον Ρώσο πλοηγό Kirill Shubin και με δύο νίκες σε ειδικές διαδρομές επέτρεψε στον οδηγό του Can-Am Maverick να μείνει μακριά από τον Ré και τον αδελφό του Pedro και να εξασφαλίσει τη ζωτικής σημασίας νίκη με διαφορά μόλις 5,1 δευτερολέπτων.

Οι βαθμοί που κέρδισαν και οι δύο οδηγοί σημαίνουν τώρα ότι ο Al-Saif ξεπέρασε τον ομόσταυλό του Meshari Al-Thefiri και είναι πρώτος στην κατάταξη του Παγκόσμιου Κυπέλλου Baja της FIA στο τμήμα T4 και ο Ré εξασφαλίζει τον τίτλο του Ευρωπαϊκού Κυπέλλου Baja της FIA με έναν γύρο να απομένει στην Πορτογαλία στα τέλη Οκτωβρίου.

Ο Al-Thefiri από το Κουβέιτ υπέστη σοβαρό πλήγμα στην προσπάθειά του για τον τίτλο του Παγκόσμιου Κυπέλλου FIA T4. Συνεργαζόμενος με τον Nasser Al-Kuwari από το Κατάρ, ο Al-Thefiri βρισκόταν σε καλή θέση μετά το κατατακτήριο στάδιο, αλλά έμεινε εκτός μετά από ένα ατύχημα στο πρώτο από τα επιλεκτικά τμήματα το απόγευμα της Παρασκευής. Τώρα πρέπει να νικήσει και τους δύο αντιπάλους του στην Πορτογαλία για να έχει ελπίδες για την κατάκτηση του τίτλου.

Μετά το ατυχές ατύχημα της Παρασκευής δεν μπορέσαμε να συνεχίσουμε", δήλωσε ο Κουβεϊτιανός. "Αλλά ανυπομονούμε για το Baja Portalegre, όπου εξακολουθούμε να παλεύουμε για το πρωτάθλημα. Μπορούμε να αφήσουμε τις δύο χειρότερες διοργανώσεις μας. Θα είναι δύσκολο, αλλά είμαστε εκεί για να παλέψουμε".

Ο μάνατζερ της South Racing Can-Am Team Scott Abraham δήλωσε: "Για άλλη μια φορά, ήταν μια σπουδαία διοργάνωση για την South Racing Can-Am Team και μια εξαιρετική δουλειά από τις δύο ομάδες μας για να εξασφαλίσουν τις δύο πρώτες θέσεις στο βάθρο. Αποδείχθηκε ότι το Can-Am ήταν το ταχύτερο και πιο αξιόπιστο SSV στον τομέα. Ήταν φανταστικό για τον Alex και τον Pedro να κατακτήσουν το εναρκτήριο Ευρωπαϊκό Κύπελλο. Όμως θα είναι ένα φινάλε που θα είναι συναρπαστικό στην Πορτογαλία με τους Saleh και Mshari να πηγαίνουν στήθος με στήθος για να προσπαθήσουν να κερδίσουν το Παγκόσμιο Κύπελλο της FIA. Η South Racing κατέκτησε επίσης το Πρωτάθλημα Ομάδων FIA T4, καθώς και το Ευρωπαϊκό Κύπελλο.

"Τώρα έχουμε μπροστά μας μερικές μεγάλες εβδομάδες δουλειάς με το Ράλλυ Μαρόκου με μεγάλη συμμετοχή στις αρχές Οκτωβρίου".

Η αγωνιστική δράση για την ομάδα Can-Am της South Racing ξεκίνησε με την κατατακτήρια ειδική διαδρομή Meduna μήκους 7,55 χιλιομέτρων το μεσημέρι της Παρασκευής. Ο Al-Saif κέρδισε τους Al-Thefiri και Ré στη νίκη της Τ4 με διαφορά μόλις 1,2 και 2,1 δευτερολέπτων αντίστοιχα, με τον Amerigo Ventura να καταλαμβάνει την τέταρτη θέση.

"Υπήρχε πολύ βαθύ νερό σε τέσσερα ή πέντε σημεία", παραδέχτηκε ο συνοδηγός του Al-Thefiri, Al-Kuwari. "Το αυτοκίνητο ήταν γεμάτο νερό. Οι φόρμες μας ήταν βρεγμένες. Αλλά ήταν μια καλή εκκίνηση".

Η σειρά εκκίνησης κανονίστηκε δεόντως για το πρώτο από τα τέσσερα επιλεκτικά τμήματα, με τις ομάδες να αντιμετωπίζουν 74,94 χιλιόμετρα σε κοντινές κοίτες ποταμών και πλημμυρικές πεδιάδες το απόγευμα της Παρασκευής. Ο Al-Saif σημείωσε χρόνο 1 ώρα 09 λεπτά 47 δευτερόλεπτα, αλλά αυτό έριξε τον Σαουδάραβα στη δεύτερη θέση στη νυχτερινή στάση πίσω από τον Ventura. Ο Ré ήταν τρίτος, αλλά ο Al-Thefiri υπέστη μια δαπανηρή εγκατάλειψη μετά από ατύχημα που έπληξε σοβαρά τις φιλοδοξίες του για τον τίτλο.

Για την τελευταία ημέρα ήταν προγραμματισμένες τρεις διαδρομές σε ένα επιλεκτικό τμήμα 92,31 χιλιομέτρων μεταξύ Pasch και Dignano.

Ο Al-Saif κέρδισε τον εναρκτήριο αγώνα σε χρόνο 1 ώρα 23 λεπτά και 59 δευτερόλεπτα και πήρε την πρωτιά από τον Ventura με διαφορά 39,3 δευτερολέπτων. Ο δεύτερος ταχύτερος χρόνος επέτρεψε επίσης στον Ré να μειώσει τη διαφορά από τον πρωτοπόρο της νύχτας και ήταν τρίτος, 61,8 δευτερόλεπτα μακριά από τον δεύτερο της γενικής κατάταξης.

Ο Ré ήταν ταχύτερος από τον Al-Saif κατά 25 δευτερόλεπτα στο δεύτερο πέρασμα και κατάφερε να ξεπεράσει τον Ventura για να πάρει τη δεύτερη θέση. Ο Πορτογάλος μπήκε κανονικά στην τρίτη και τελευταία διαδρομή ακολουθώντας τον Σαουδάραβα ομόσταυλό του με διαφορά 1 λεπτού και 16,1 δευτερολέπτων.

"Προσπαθήσαμε και πάλι να μην κάνουμε τίποτα κακό στο αυτοκίνητο. Το Can-Am ήταν τέλειο. Έπρεπε να νικήσουμε τη Yamaha και κερδίσαμε το σκέλος στην Τ4 με έναν καλό χρόνο. Ήταν ωραίο να οδηγώ σε αυτό το στάδιο".

Ο Ré κατάφερε να κερδίσει το τελευταίο στάδιο με 71 δευτερόλεπτα διαφορά και να επιβάλει ένα συναρπαστικό φινάλε, αλλά δεν ήταν αρκετό για να στερήσει από τον Al-Saif τη νίκη στην κατηγορία με διαφορά μόλις 5,1 δευτερολέπτων. Ο Ventura συμπλήρωσε τις θέσεις του βάθρου.
