Both drivers and passengers of SSVs and ATVs should always wear a helmet—and the best helmet is DOT certified. Not only do helmets save lives, they protect your from whatever happens along the way. Can-Am teaches you the what, why and how of helmets.
WHAT IS A DOT CERTIFIED HELMET?
DOT certified helmets are marked on the back with a U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) stamp. This ensures the helmet has been made to the highest standards and will provide adequate protection. Avoid buying a used helmet, even a DOT certified one. You can never be sure what it’s been through—not all impacts leave a mark. Be sure to replace your DOT helmet before your next ride if it sustains any damage.
HELMETS AND OFF-ROADING
ARE HELMETS REQUIRED ON SIDE-BY-SIDES?
Helmet laws for SSVs/ATVs vary throughout the US and Canada. But even if you’re not required to wear one, we strongly recommend it. They can be the difference between fun and done.
WHY WEAR A HELMET?
Safety is definitely part of it, but longtime off-roaders agree that helmets also provide more comfort. Helmets take the worry out of being hit by the sun, sand, gravel, debris and overhead branches. If you ever have to make a sudden stop, your helmet will also prevent a nasty bruise or concussion if your head hits the handlebars. Helmets also cushion your ears from road noise and wind.
Another safety advantage of helmets—especially ones in lighter colors—is they make you more visible to other off-roaders. Plus, you can always find one that fits your unique style. And did you know that "helmet hair" is cool? It’s a telltale sign you’ve been on a wicked off-road adventure!
HOW TO CHOOSE A HELMET
It’s easy to learn how to measure your ATV helmet size. The perfect helmet is one that fits like a glove. Before buying a new helmet, try it on and shake your head up and down and side to side. If it doesn’t shift or move, you’re good to ride. This advice goes for both men and women because helmets are unisex. Use the same logic when measuring a kid for an ATV helmet.
