How to Maximize Your Can-Am EV Motorcycle Charging Experience

The new Can-Am electric motorcycle were designed with innovative battery technology which allows quick and efficient charging every time in any condition.

Our Can-Am team designed and built the Origin and the Pulse in-house from scratch, putting our expertise and deep love of the sport into every EV. We’ll show you why charging your battery efficiently is essential for worry-free, exciting rides—and how our industry-first liquid-cooled charging system ensures maximum battery performance, allowing you to head out with confidence!

1. Understanding the charging requirements

In Europe, Can-Am electric motorcycles are compatible with both Mode 2 and Mode 3 charging systems.

Mode 2 uses a standard AC household outlet (220V) and is convenient for charging. You can charge almost anywhere using the same outlet that you use for your phone, lamp, etc. Just plug a dedicated cable into the wall, such as the one offer by Can-Am, and on your motorcycle to slowly charge the battery. Although this provides a slower charge, it is more battery-friendly.

On the other hand, Mode 3 charging is faster. This type of charger is the same as those used for electric cars and requires a specialized outlet (240V).

It's important to note that our vehicles are not compatible with Level 3 charging, like Tesla charging stations.

2. Where to charge

Public charging networks make going on long and remote trips easy for electric motorcycle riders. These networks offer numerous charging points, making it convenient to charge your EV on the go. In Europe, several companies offer maps with charging station locations, which help you plan your itinerary and stops.

Make sure the connector type indicated on the map is the same as the one of your motorcycle. In Europe, the Can-Am Pulse and Origin plug type is the IEC 62196 Type 2 (Mennekes). Other connectors such as CCS/SAE, CHAdeMO or NACS are not compatible with our motorcycles.

While some potential EV owners worry about access to public charging stations, up to 90% of electric vehicle charging is actually done at home overnight, which is convenient, practical and cost-effective.

There are two different home charging options available for electric motorcycle owners. You can use a standard wall outlet for Mode 2 charging or you can install a dedicated Mode 3 charging outlet for faster charging, We recommend hiring a master electrician for the installation.

To optimize home charging in general, consider plugging in during off-peak hours to save on electricity costs and reduce grid strain. Investing in smart charging solutions can help manage and monitor your charging sessions more effectively.

3. Charging speeds

Mode 2 charging is slower and takes around 3 hours and 10 minutes to charge from 20-80% or around 5 hours and 15 minutes to charge from 0-100%. On a Mode 3 charging outlet the time to charge significantly reduces to 50 minutes for a 20-80% charge and 90 minutes for 0-100%.

4. Maximize charging efficiency

We recommend to keep a charging level between 20-80%. It is recommended because it is the most efficient and quickest way for battery cells to absorb energy, whether it's for a phone, laptop, or any other device. Charging beyond 80% is slower and less optimal, as the cells start to fill and the charging rate slows to balance them, taking additional time. This will also benefit your battery state of health over time.

Understanding your Can-Am electric motorcycle charging needs and capacity is important for maximizing performance and battery life. At Can-Am, we are committed to providing innovative solutions for everyone who loves motorcycling. Our dedication to enhancing the overall riding experience goes back decades and is reflected in the advanced charging technologies and user-focused designs of the Origin and Pulse models.
