4 PRO TIPS TO EXTEND YOUR EV MOTORCYCLE TRIP RANGE

Learn how Can-Am electric motorcycles offer more enjoyable and longer rides with our expert advice on planning and charging management.

This is city autonomy at its best! Get up to 160 km of range autonomy on the Pulse and 145 km on the Origin in the city, depending on riding style and conditions. With the WMTC* cycle, you will get around 130 km of range for the Pulse and 115 km on the Origin, mostly due to its off-road capabilities. To help you manage every outing with ease, each Can-Am electric motorcycle comes with the latest tech to assist you in route planning, battery management, locating the nearest charging station, and Can-Am’s industry-leading liquid-cooled on-board charger which delivers quick charging from 20-80% in only 50 minutes so you can get going faster. Follow these expert tips on getting the very best out of your EV vehicle.

1. Plan your route strategically

Planning your electric motorcycle adventures strategically involves several common-sense steps.

a) Keep in mind that while on the road, you can easily find the nearest charging station directly on your display with Apple CarPlay. This way, there is no need to pull over and check your phone. Various apps like Electrify and Charge Point in the US can help.

b) When planning your itinerary, try to stick to flat roads. Like any vehicle, the more elevations you ride, the more power the battery will use. This is the same for a conventional engine which uses more fuel on inclines. Flatter roads are best for EV efficiency and will help you get the maximum range on every ride.

c) Prioritize secondary roads instead of highways. Riding at sustained high speeds will considerably reduce the range of your battery. In contrast with a conventional vehicle, the range is better in the city than on the highway for electric vehicles since repetitive stops and decelerations return some power to the battery thanks to the Passive and Active regen. The battery uses considerably less energy at lower speeds.

d) The weather may have an impact on your journey, especially in colder temperatures under 10 degrees. But the good news is that BRP uses industry-leading technology with a cooling system and a special coolant formula that allows heat transition when the temperature is cold outside! This means the liquid-cooled system provides more efficient cooling when it's hot and help the motorcycle electric system to reach the optimal temperature when it's cold.

How does it work? Well, the special coolant helps transfer the heat from one component to another when the temperature is not optimal and will help the colder component reaching a more effective temperature by transferring the heat from one part to another until it reaches the optimal temperature. This is what’s great about this system: the onboard charger, the inverter, the battery and the motor are all liquid-cooled! The liquid formula is an antifreeze/coolant specially formulated for BRP vehicles and is long lasting with a 5-year formula.

Following these steps will keep your battery charged and your motorcycle on the road for longer.

2. Optimize your riding style

Here are some proven techniques to optimize your EV motorcycle ride:

a) To maximize range, maintaining a mix of acceleration and deceleration is better than sustained high speeds. Try to avoid long sustained high speeds such as the highway since it will impact your range. Choosing flatter scenic routes makes for great experiences (and pics) and helps conserve energy. Your estimated range adjusts based on your current ride, so driving aggressively can result in a decreased estimated range for subsequent trips. It’s important to note that fast acceleration on your electric motorcycle doesn't just use a bit more energy, it uses a lot more! So, driving smoothly and at a consistent speed is the way to go if you want to get the most out of your battery range.

b) To get the best mileage from your electric motorcycle, it's best to avoid sudden acceleration. When you ease off the accelerator while moving, your motorcycle will put some energy back into the battery by using the movement of the motorcycle. This is called Passive Regen and you can adjust it depending on your preference. Select between Off-MIN and MAX, with MAX putting more power back into the battery and more deceleration when you ease off the twist grip. Over time, these little boosts add up to make your ride more efficient. You can also use the Active Regen by twisting the grip in the opposite direction to put even more power back into the battery and create even more deceleration than the passive regeneration.

c) Consider the impact of additional weight on how much range you will have on your ride, especially when heading out with a passenger. Carrying an extra person increases the load, reducing autonomy. Keeping track of how much storage you're carrying on your motorcycle helps you figure out how far you can go before needing to recharge. This way, you can better plan your trips.

3. Manage your motorcycle’s systems

To make sure your electric motorcycle runs smoothly and efficiently, here are two simple tips:

a) Make sure your tires are filled with the right amount of air to make riding smoother with less effort.
b) Regularly maintain your motorcycle and follow your user guide for more information. Your Can-Am dealer is always ready to help with maintenance.

4. Pack Light and Smart

When planning your rides, reduce unnecessary weight by packing only the items you’ll need. We offer a range of accessories to make storage easy, from small compartments for your phone to bigger top cases for longer adventures! Exclusive to BRP, LinQ accessories are installed in seconds and include a variety of must-have items like saddlebags, a passenger seat, and more.

Maximizing range is the best way for electric motorcycle riders to extend their adventures and make the most of every journey. By implementing simple tips like maintaining tire pressure, minimizing weight, and conserving power, you can enjoy longer rides.
